Year of Mercy - Liverpool Archdiocese

The Archdiocese of Liverpool is celebrating the Year of Mercy by inviting each Pastoral Area to the cathedral for a Saturday pilgrimage. On Saturday 16th April it was the turn of the Warrington and Widnes parishes to descend on the cathedral. We were welcomed to the cathedral by Canon Anthony O’ Brien, Dean of the cathedral with the words:
‘The Holy Door in our Cathedral represents the pilgrim’s destination… God is the great Door through which we must enter if we are to go to the House of God. As you cross the threshold of the Jubilee Door just be conscious for a moment that each day we enter and leave by so many doors without even noticing. Pause for a moment, opening the door of your heart to allow the Lord to journey into your new life.’

Reconciliation Service
From that introduction we were split into groups with a priest leading us in the 6 Stations of Mercy. Our group was fortunate to have Bishop Tom Williams as our group leader. He led us out of the main cathedral door and took us round to the Holy Door where we paused to reflect on the journey as pilgrims. We blessed ourselves at the font given as a gift by Pope Paul VI when the cathedral was opened nearly 49 years ago. As we walked around the cathedral, stopping at each Station, we listened to Bishop Tom as we prayed the Stations together.
Sacrament of Reconciliation
After completing the Stations a Service of Reconciliation was led by the Widnes Pastoral Area before many priests and Bishop Tom made themselves available around the sanctuary and benches for individual confessions. It was moving to see so many, young and old and all ages in between, take this opportunity to receive the Lord’s mercy.
At midday Bishop Tom was the main celebrant with the priests from the two Pastoral Areas as concelebrants. At the end of a beautiful Mass we retired to the meeting room where we had a shared lunch. Some of us then ventured outside, braving the chilly afternoon air, to sit and chat before once again boarding the coach to return home. All in all it was a day to remember and many thanks to the cathedral staff for facilitating it.
